YouTube can be a great place to find new music. In fact, I remember the days of finding new on MySpace, and how exciting it was, and then MySpace went bye bye. YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram are dominating as the most powerful social online meeting places on earth, with the exception of Area 51. Ha ha!
Today, my favorite place to hangout online has become YouTube. For me, and millions of others, it has become the destination to find new music and YouTube has been doing a decent job of recommending some real gems to me. In fact, that's how I became aware of the incredible Drab Majesty. When I first saw the album cover for Drab Majesty Modern Mirror, I did not know quite what to think about this band. I was like, who is this weird looking alien guy?
I grew up as a teenager in the 80s, and when I look at their album cover, I had for a moment, that 80s vibe. On the album cover, you have a guy with a black leather jacket, white hair and white make-up with the dark shades on, which looked pretty cool. Back in the 80s I listened to Pet Shop Boys, Real Life, Soft Cell, Duran Duran, The Police, A Flock Of Seagulls, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Cars, and Blondie to just name some of the groups. Do you think I have good taste?
Drab Majesty definitely has that synth-pop sound, and I'm not going to get into the whole background of how this album is the retelling of Narcissus, because you can find that online elsewhere. What I want to talk about is how this music makes me feel and what it gets me to reflect upon or fantasize about. How many of us ever reveal our dark secret fantasies, that we have while listening to certain types of music that really turns us on?
The song that YouTube recommended to me from Drab Majesty was "The Other Side" and I was instantly transported to some blissful place in my own mind. It was a dark and yet comfortable place. When the song was over, I played it again, and let it take me in deeper. All I could think was how amazing these guys were, and how did they get so good?
As I listened to "The Other Side" again, I could picture a young Jennifer Connelly (how many young guys had a crush on her in the 80s?) reaching out through a mirror hanging on my bedroom wall and saying come here and listen to this. I could then see myself in the movie Labyrinth listening to Drab Majesty and Jennifer waves her hand to reveal a hidden world. Next, Jennifer and I are running side by side, holding hands, as the mirrored hallway, that seems to go on forever, starts breaking and shattering all around us. We stop and look at each other. We were breaking free!
Now, all of that just came to me when I was listening to Drab Majesty "The Other Side" and I realize that may not have anything to do with what their song was about, but the point is this, their music took me on a journey into another world like mine, but full of more possibilities. I rarely have music affect me like this where I can start writing a dark science fiction fantasy short story flowing directly from my stream of consciousness. One person on YouTube said this about Drab Majesty's music, "My heart bleeds your melodies."
So many positive comments on YouTube about this group and it's all well deserved. Many have said they are addicted to their music and I can honestly say, so am I! I haven't enjoyed a group like this in many years, which is sad, but that's life. Drab Majesty did not just knock it out of the park with "The Other Side" ... they knocked it into another galaxy! There is a sense of flying somewhere while listening to Drab Majesty's song "The Other Side" and what a relaxing and pleasurable experience this song is to take in and deeply feel.
If you love the 80s darkwave dreamy sounds, then you need to check out Drab Majesty, right freaking now. You can get their album at the link on this web-page or just click the red album picture to the left of this paragraph. Please, do not miss these guys, because when you start listening to them it will change your life or at least your current musical choices. Let Drab Majesty take you on a dark, psychedelic mystery, into a realm that is unknown, where you let go and fly high. I'm seriously hooked on their futuristic album that keeps me in a trance. Make sure you support these guys by liking them on YouTube and subscribing to them. And if you have never really danced alone in your room before, I bet you will when you're listening to this new album ... they really are MAGIC ... DARK MAGIC!
